When you think of luxury rail travel in the United States, the
American Orient Express automatically comes to mind. The romance of rail travel, when it was not just about the destination but rather the journey itself, calls to mind a bygone era of vintage rolling stock, white-gloved porters, and refined accommodations. This first class experience defines the American Orient Express—and while it brought the dream of elegant rail travel to life from 1991-2006, its heritage lives on.
The American Orient Express rail cars, which recall a rich history of mid-twentieth century train travel, have undergone a $22 million refurbishment that ensure these cars offer the finest modern features while retaining their rich interiors and luxurious appointments that harkens back to the golden age of train travel. Original American Orient Express rail cars first operated in some of America’s most iconic trains including the Twentieth Century Limited, the California Zephyr, the Denver Zephyr, the Capitol Limited, and the City of Los Angeles. These refurbished vintage rail cars will soon be back in commission as the rolling stock for the new luxurious American Railway Explorer.
Like their tenure with the American Orient Express, these historic cars will travel to quintessential American destinations and renowned National Parks on four new itineraries that will undoubtedly continue its tradition of an incomparable luxury rail experience.
